Brooke's Best Works

Writer's picture: Brooke MorganBrooke Morgan

Within this English course, I have learned so much about different writing styles and how to put them to great use. I have been exposed to many moving poems, novels, and plays in grade 10 English and these stories and pieces of work have permanently changed the way that I write my own stories and portray my life. My favourite writing styles used this year have included analytical writing and creative writing, as I feel as though these writing types allow for my imagination and vocabulary to run free without being suppressed in order to follow certain guidelines. In the future, I plan on using these skills to further my writing capabilities and better my detail in written work.

My 5 Favourite Assessments

In an analytical essay, it should include a well written thesis: one that is constantly being referred back to, as well as proper vocabulary and structure analysis. Within my analysis of "I love this Land," I was able to create a strong thesis, and continuously refer back to it through use of literary devices and structure analysis. I use a myriad of different quotes from the poem to emphasize inner meaning behind them, and I further investigate the explanations behind each quote used. I am proud of this work because of the detail I used to ensure that I am meeting each requirement, as well as the order in which I follow each part of the analysis.

In a poem, there should include poetic methods such as Caesura, Enjambment etc,

My poem, "I'm Here," shows use of end stopped line, rhyming, and link to context as it

Has many quotations to analyze within the poem.

Every metaphor within "I'm Here" was created with deeper meaning,

Relating to context outside of poetry, and more "real life" experiences.

Each stanza of "I'm Here" highlights a different perspective of the two characters, allowing for the readers to gain a better understanding of the two characters connection. I am proud of this work because of the meaningful background behind the poem, as it speaks closely to me. I am so proud of the literary devices used within my poem.

In an analytical essay, there should include knowledge of the issue addressed, as well as ability to analyze key extracts from the text. I used these skills by gaining a better understanding of the internalized racial discrimination in Chicago prior to writing my analysis: I read articles, watched interviews, and internally analyzed the text in my head before beginning my piece of writing. This way, I was able to have full knowledge regarding the topic and was able to reflect well on it from that knowledge learned. I am extremely proud of this work, as I was able to shine light on a very serious issue whilst still remaining broad and open ended to allow for reader interpretation.

Within the ISP, it was required to create a character that struggles with identity, and it was also required to include a novel (or two pages of one). I used these skills by creating two pages of creative writing. Within my creative writing, I included skills taught in this course such as colons, literary devices, and structure to better the level of detail and quality in my creative writing. I was also able to create a character that struggled with identity, but put a twist on this character to give them a less relatable and more fantasy oriented approach: I made the identity struggle fantasy as opposed to the stereotypical teenage identity trope. I am proud of this work because of this, as I believe making my character have a less than common identity struggle would give my novel a fresher, more intriguing sense to it.

Regarding my website, I chose to make my colour scheme purples (shades and tones), as it is my favourite colour, and I wanted my website to reflect my interests and passions, two of which being the colour purple and writing! I chose to put my influences on the home page to give the viewer an idea of what I strive to be and what I strive for my work to resemble and draw inspiration from. I divided my written sections up into "poetry and analytical" categories of writing, as these are the most commonly written works in this course for me, and I wanted to separate them to add some organization as well as differentiating qualities between the two different writing styles; as they are quite different. I am very proud of my website, as it reflects myself very well: it is well organized, colourful and interesting, as well as informative and knowledge based. I had lots of fun working on this website and will continue to add to it outside of this English course.
