Jennifer Lawrence was, and is a very successful actress, with her being one of the most popular Hollywood actresses in recent years due to her involvement in many successful productions and movies.
Before her massive success, Lawrence was struggling to make it as an actress and model in New York, where she moved when she was only 14 years old. Having dropped out of middle school to pursue her acting career, Lawrence told 60 Minutes that she technically has no education past middle school, and has no high school diploma or GED.
Prior to booking her world famous role in The Hunger Games, which released in 2012, on March 23, Lawrence built up her reputation in mostly independent films, with the exception of her involvement in the X-Men franchise. When the role of Katniss Everdeen was presented to her, Lawrence nearly turned it down. This is because she felt as though it was too big of a production and would overwhelm her and her rather small fan base that would soon explode. Her mother, Karen Lawrence, talked to Jennifer and explained to her how “dumb it would be to turn down an opportunity like this.”
Size wasn’t the only factor that played in her hesitation to accept the role in the movie. Lawrence stated that she was also afraid of how the films would change her life in the long run. “The truth was, in the bottom of my heart, I wanted to do it. I wanted to play this character. I was scared of the aftermath, but you can’t say no to things because you’re scared, you just have to go for it,” stated Lawrence when asked about her hesitation and her overcoming of said hesitation. In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Lawrence shared that she was very grateful to her mom for convincing her to join the film.
While speaking in a press conference in Berlin, Jennifer was asked if Katniss’ courage inspired the actress to write her wage-gap essay that appeared in Lena Dunham’s newsletter regarding the wage-gap between Lawrence and her American Hustle male co-stars, Lawrence stated “I don’t see how I couldn’t be inspired by this character, I was so inspired by her when I read the books, it’s the reason I wanted to play her.”
Lawrence also states how she would get regularly frustrated by how long it took Katniss to realize her power in the movies, although she did appreciate her bravery and sense of humility.
