The Hunger Games: Identifying And Defying Totalitarianism

Writer's picture: Brooke MorganBrooke Morgan

The biggest reason as to why there had been no revolution or rebellion amongst the district against the Capitol, is due to the totalitarian and controlling structure intended to do just that, keep the districts in line.

When first chosen as tribute, Katniss immediately began formulating her plan to win the games, with the mindset of the other tributes being her antagonists. This did, in fact, make Peeta’s creativity and kindness, as well as Rue’s friendship and similarity to Prim make it hard for Katniss to think of these two as her so-called “enemy.” As the novel progresses, Katniss starts to realize that her true enemy is not her opponents in the games, and that it is actually the very people who put them in the games in the first place: the Capitol.

The fact that Katniss could eventually identify the difference between a structured world and a dictatorship, shows how great her character development also got throughout the novel.

Once Katniss became the face of rebellion, after bringing back the controversial three finger raise in the air, which represented the first rebellion of Panem that took place more than 75 years prior to the events of the Hunger Games, she became a symbol of change. This came with many problems, especially with President Snow. Katniss’ ability to persevere no matter what also showed a lot of character development from the once meek, shy girl from District 12.

I feel as though once Katniss learned the truth about President Snow, and how he had been poisoning people for years, she finally took control of her own life and realized that it was primarily up to her to change the world that had raised her and that had ruined her, and for this, she is a worldwide favourite character and bravery wise.
